ANTHONY THIEME (DUTCH-AMERICAN, 1888-1954) LANDSCAPE PAINTING, oil on canvas, an outstanding example by the artist, depicting a pond and an early mill in a rural setting with small figure wearing blue jacket at center and mountains in the distance. Incised signature lower right. Titled, possibly in the artist's hand, "Mill in Connecticut" verso. Additional inscriptions verso include "Mrs. McCray" and dimensions. Housed under glass in likely original frame with artist plaque. Circa 1935. 24 1/2" x 29 1/4" sight, 29 1/4" x 34 1/2" OA.

Catalogue Note: Anthony Thieme (Dutch-American, 1888-1954) was one of the most important American Impressionist painters of the 20th century, and the value of, and critical attention being paid to, his work continues to rise. Born in Rotterdam, Thieme studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague before moving on to continue his education in Italy and Germany. He immigrated to the U.S. around 1920 and lived first in New York City before eventually settling in Rockport, Massachusetts, where he cultivated a successful career as an artist and a teacher. Thieme also traveled south during the winters to St. Augustine, Florida so that he could paint and socialize, far removed from the severe New England climate.
Anthony Thieme was recognized in his lifetime as an accomplished artist and held memberships with numerous organizations throughout the country such as the Salmangundi Club and the Boston Art Club. He also exhibited regularly at many organizations throughout the United States and Europe, including the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Los Angeles Museum of Art, and the Corcoran Gallery. Highly regarded as a master in the treatment of light and water, Thieme's work is represented in major collections such as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Montclair Art Museum.
The present example exhibits the best of the artist's signature qualities and draws the viewer in to the scene through the deft treatment of the pond's surface. Acquired (possibly directly from the artist) by Bernard Winn McCray (1907-1986) and Harriet Hildreth Scott McCray (1907-1986) of Richmond, VA, on one of several excursions the young couple took to, or through, the Boston area. It has remained untouched and has descended directly in the family.

Excellent condition with some craquelure and very minor wear to frame.
