Charles Emile Jacque, Lamb Nursing. o/c.
Item Details
Description
Jacque, Charles Emile (France, 1813-1894). Lamb Nursing. Oil on canvas. Signed l.l., Ch. Jacque. 18 1/2" x 26 3/8". Carved gilded frame: 27 1/4" x 35 1/8".
Jacque is considered by many art scholars as the co-founder of the Barbizon School. After a walk together the year before with his close friend, Jean-Francois Millet, and discovering the then isolated hamlet of Barbizon the forest near Fontainbleau, Charles Jacque moved from there from Paris, in 1849. (Both men were anxious to distance their families from the pestilence prevailing in the capital.) Soon home to a large artistic community engaged in developing a new landscape tradition, the town became known as the birthplace of an entire school of painting bearing its name. Jacque’s bucolic images of shepherds and their flocks, appearing amidst green pastures and the neighboring Forest of Fontainebleau, became synonymous with “Barbizon School” painting. Such scenes suggest a tranquil, simple life that appealed to Parisian audiences. During the 1860s, Jacque achieved substantial popular and critical acclaim, notably for his depictions of sheep and other animals which endowed them with souls and personalities.
His work highlights the sensitive maternal love of the ewe and uses a chiaroscuro technique to draw a vivid contrast between the golden straw and brass pan on the barn floor with a subtle, dark background.
The work has been authenticated by Jean-Pierre Chambon.
Provenance: Property from the Virginia Estate of a Distinguished Private Collector and Art Historian, Red Gate, formerly Greenville, Millwood, VA.
