524. [JAMES A. GARFIELD] A biography and published memorials after his death. In Memoriam: James A. Garfield by Major J. M. Bundy, 274pp, 5"x7½", A.S. Barnes & Co., New York, 1881. First Edition thus. Original gilt decorative cover and spine on gold cloth boards as issued. Library of Congress bookplate on inside cover and stamp on title page. Portrait engraving of Garfield frontispiece behind tissue guard. Illustrations within text. Containing campaign biography by Maj. Bundy, much of it dictated by Garfield, updated beginning with election taken from eyewitnesses and other contemporary sources leading up to the assassination, "With an Account of the President's Death and Funeral Obsequies." Slightly shaken; light shelfwear; bumped bottom corner tips; else in VG+ condition. Excellent historical content. Accompanied by two published Memorial pamphlets, one a 13pp "Memorial" sermon delivered by Rev. E. P. Farnham at Friendship Street Baptist Church on Sep 24, 1881, in Rhode Island; and a 27pp "Eulogy" delivered by US Senator George F. Hoar in Mechanics Hall, Worcester, MA, on Dec 30, 1881, with some paper loss at cover edges. Light general toning; else in very good condition with noted exception. Also a cabinet card of "Our Late President" featuring a quarter-length portrait. Moderate general toning, especially to mount; light wear and scattered spotting and minor staining to mount.
