Description
1672 Corpus Juris Civilis Justinian LAW Jurisprudence Godefroy Byzantine Latin

“The heritage of Roman law is not a ghost but a living reality. It is present in the court as well as in the market-place. It lives on not only in the institutions but even in the language of all civilized nations."– Justinian I

A rare and important edition of ‘Corpus Juris Civilis’ edited by Denis Godefroy. The Godefroy editions of this iconic work were influential in the law field into the 20th-century. While Godefroy was known as a jurist, his fame came from his edition of the ‘Corpus’, which went through dozens of editions through the 18th-century.

In 530 A.D., Emperor Justinian I commissioned the rewriting of all Roman Law, which included case law, civil law, and a guide for helping juries interpret laws. Some of the most important laws that Justinian helped established were those that protected women from being forced into prostitution, and the severe punishment for rapists. These helped create a Byzantine culture that had not yet established a firm structure.
