1876 1ed Jules Verne Michael Strogoff Extraordinary Voyages Russian Illustrated
“Reality provides us with facts so romantic that imagination itself could add nothing to them.” ― Jules Verne
Jules Verne’s adventure novels are some of the most popular and famous works of literature of all time. ‘Michael Strogoff’ is a relatively unknown adventure novel by Verne, but it is part of the collection of ‘Extraordinary Voyages’. According to Jules Verne’s editor, Pierre-Jules Hetzel, the aim of this collection was“to outline all the geographical, geological, physical, and astronomical knowledge amassed by modern science and to recount, in an entertaining and picturesque format, the history of the universe.” (Perez)
‘Michael Strogoff: The courier of the Czar” is considered by some as Verne’s best book. According to literary critic Leonard Davidow,“Verne has written no better book than this, in fact it is deservedly ranked as one of the most thrilling tales ever written.”
Its popularity extended beyond this fine first edition. It was reprinted numerous times, adapted to a play, as well as films, television, and cartoon examples. The story of a Russian messenger, carrying secrets across the Siberian frontier, defending against Tartar invasions!
This beautiful example has been rebound and lacks the title page. It is rather difficult without these two points to identify edition, though, it is an 1876 first French edition, as it includes the Hetzel catalogue dated 1876.
