Description
Exceptional craftsmanship is required to intugrate a story telling design in to a functional piece of furniture. This Spanish Papeleria, a compartmentalized cabinet depicts the table of Cervantes Don Quixote. Twenty from the classic Spanish book are portrayed in this 8 foot cabinet made of ebony, inlaid with bone and tortoise shell. The inset on the top of the cabinet, directly above, is a portrait of Don Quixote de la Mancha. His escapades including the adventure of the windmills, the auguries he dealt with upon returning to his village. Arguments given to him by Sancho Panza, and the mishaps of his followers are detailed in other insets. Two comparable cabinets are in the Museo de Artes Decorative in Madrid. This rare piece is from the Estate of Nellie Durfee. This rare, one of a kind masterpiece has two parts. A lower and upper body. The central door (with key) has an inlaid and a mirrored "Room". The top drawer has eight drawers with 6 turned baluster supports, and the lower part has 3 apron drawers. Measurement: H 97" x 67" x 18"
