In 1858, the ‘Great Debates’ between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A Douglas occurred in a series of several small debates. The focus of the debates was slavery, particularly the expansion of slavery to new territories such as Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri. Douglas was accusatory of Lincoln throughout the debates, accusing him of opposing state laws and court cases such as the Dred Scott decision.
