1889 Dante Alighieri Purgatory & Paradise Divine Comedy Gustave DORE Illustrated

“Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.” ― Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy A beautiful folio edition of Dante’s Purgatory and Paradise published by Henry Altemus. Altemus was awarded a patent for a particular type of binding for photographic albums. These albums were huge sellers for Altemus and was the mainstay of their publishing business until the mid-1880s. Like other publishers of its era, it published a wide variety of titles, in a wide variety of formats. The company published over two hundred series. Dante’s “Divine Comedy” is one of the most important and long-lasting works for literature. This rare English edition, translated by H.F. Cary, is Cary’s most famous and important work. In 1814, Cary published his translation on his own, as publishers would not take on the risk. This Altemus edition is highly sought, especially in this condition, and is illustrated with plates of Gustave Dore!
