Description
1627 Emblems Pia Desideria Emblemata Illustrated Pope Urban VIII Herman Hugo

“The most popular religious emblem book of the 17th-century!”

Herman Hugo was a 17th-century Jesuit who is chiefly remembered for his work ‘Pia Desideria’. This work was a spiritual emblem book and was regularly considered “the most popular emblem book of the 17th-century.” (Daly, p.109). This highly rare and desirable work features 45 engravings of Boethius van Bolswert, a renowned engraver. ‘Pia Desideria’ illustrates the spiritual path to salvation and offers meditative verses for love and prayer by Hugo and prominent Church Fathers. The 45 plates that are included in this work, including a portrait of Urban VIII, were reissued in Quarles’ ‘Emblems’ years later.

This 1627 edition was published in Paris and was translated into French from the original Latin.
