ROMARE BEARDEN'S roots lie in early American Modernism. He is today regarded as the leading Afro-American artist. 'Hamlet' was first shown in 1959 in one of New York's leading avant garde galleries, Cordier and Warren (which became Cordier and Eckstrom the following year.) Though generally associated with collage, this early work shows the consciousness of an artist working in the heat of Abstract Expressionism, capturing it's velocity and spirit in a well tuned moment.
