Book Details: Bound in tan cloth with cream title labels on the spine and front board, this very rare first edition, is limited to 200 copies. The book is inscribed by the author on the front flyleaf to Robert Drane, January 30th 1934. Illustrated plates and a frontispiece portrait from photographs enhance the text.

William Whann Mackall (1817-1891), a Maryland native, graduated from West Point and entered the artillery service, although he eventually served with the adjutant general’s branch during the war. He served in the Confederate army during the Civil War. General Mackall’s experiences in the Mexican War are covered in chapters 7-11. He initially served in the northern campaign, engaged in the Battle of Monterrey, and was appointed to Worth’s staff. After transferring to Scott’s command, he was at every battle from Veracruz to Mexico City. After the Civil War, Mackall was a farmer in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Condition / Notes: This antique volume shows well with some indications of age and wear, including shelfwear and rubbing. The binding and text block are sound. Text and illustrations are clear and crisp through mild age toning/foxing.
