Description
AMERICAN PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, center having large two-story red house with yard flanked by two floral motifs, above reads "Our friend and sister Lo / Is Dead The Gold And Lif / Eless Clay Hath Made In / Dust Her Silent bed and ther / It Must Decay" with two eight-point stars, signed along the bottom "Mary Stafford Finished This Work 1843". Housed under glass in an old wood frame. Possibly Pennsylvania or New York. Dated 1843. 16 3/4" x 16 3/4" sight, 22 1/2" x 22 1/2" OA.
Toning, light fading of thread, slight bleeding of black/brown thread lettering, frame with wear and scratches, some chipping along edges. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance: Property of a Shenandoah Valley private collector._x000D_
Found at an estate near Otego, NY.
