Boston: Tappan and Dennet, 1842. 8vo. 2 volumes bound in 1. Frontispiece, xviii, [2, blank], 404; viii, 437 pp. Publisher's brown blind-stamped cloth with spine lettered in gilt, edgewear and some tearing/chipping to spine and hinges, binding structurally quite sound. Frontis foxed, otherwise generally quite clean with some occasional light soiling and/or light foxing in a few places (mostly near front of volume.) Very Good. *************************** FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY: "Ira Mayhew. Monroe Michn. Presented by the Author Nov. 29, 1845." Quite scarce. Seeking passage to the Mediterranean, the author hitched a ride with the U.S. Navy and found himself employed as chaplain on the ship. The text includes a lengthy chapter on the Navy of the United States, including remarks on the practice of flogging (pp. 383-434.) Rockwell further records his visits to Gibraltar, Minorca, Barcelona, Naples, Rome, and stops along the Spanish coast. Sabin 72420
