Beecher Henry

Henry Ward Beecher Signature less than a Year after Beecher-Tilton Adultery Scandal

A paper slip inscribed, signed, and dated by renowned Congregationalist minister Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) as "Brooklyn June 3, 1876 / Cordially Yours / Henry Ward Beecher". The slip is mounted to a larger cream stock card, with a sepia-colored oval photograph of Beecher's wife, writer Eunice Bullard Beecher (1812-1897), found verso. Isolated minor discoloration to the paper slip. Silk adhesive runs along one of the stock card's edges. Else near fine. The stock measures 5.125" x 7.75".

In June 1876, it had been almost a year since the resolution of the "Beecher-Tilton Scandal" in which Henry Ward Beecher had been accused of committing adultery with Elizabeth Tilton, the wife of his friend, newspaper editor Theodore Tilton. The humiliating and widely publicized civil trial took place between January and July 1875, ending in a mistrial. Beecher had enjoyed the reputation of a closeted libertine even before the trial. He was not substantially affected by any negative publicity after the hung jury's verdict; in fact, he benefited from it financially.

Henry Ward Beecher had wed Eunice Bullard, a Massachusetts doctor's daughter, in 1837. The couple had an unhappy marriage. It was burdened by Beecher's many absences, by his infidelity, and by the deaths of most of their children.

Beecher was a popular clergyman known for his outstanding speaking ability. A social reformer, he championed the abolition of slavery, women's suffrage, and the temperance movement. Eunice Ward Beecher was an accomplished writer. From Dawn to Daylight: A Simple Story of a Western Home, her semiautobiographical recollections of a minister's wife, was published under a pseudonym in 1859.
