WOODCUT OF HOCHELAGA / GRAVURE DE HOCHELAGA
Item Details
Description
A woodcut illustration of Hochelaga, Iroquois village of Montreal, based on details recorded by Jacques Cartier after his second voyage to the New World in 1535. This interpretation by Giacomo Gastaldi (1500-1566) with apparent artistic license is the first printed plan of a North American village. Gastaldi was an Italian cartographer and this work was subsequently printed by Venetian Battista Ramusio in the compendium titled Delle Navigationi and viaggi (Of Navigation and Travel). Venice, published 1565-66. Hochelaga had disappeared by the time Samuel de Champlain arrived some 50 years later. The exact location of Hochelaga, somewhere at the base of Mount Royal, is still unknown. H: 18"; W: 21".
