James Fenimore Cooper Signed Check

A check signed by American novelist James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851), as "J. Fenimore Cooper" at lower right. Check No. 774 was issued from the Otsego County Bank cashier in Cooperstown, NY on October 31, 1832. The amount of $25 was made payable to "Isaac Fairchild". Red stamped at center. The "er" of "Cooper" is slightly smeared. Expected wear including a minor closed tear at upper left, else very good to near fine. 6.25" x 2.25". Accompanied by two color postcards, the first one of Cooper's portrait by John Wesley Jarvis, and the second showing a "Victorian Room" at the Fenimore House in Cooperstown, New York.

Cooper is widely recognized as America's first major novelist. Initially, Cooper modeled his works directly on or in opposition to acknowledged British novelists like Sir Walter Scott and Jane Austen. Yet as he gained in confidence, Cooper began to explore aspects of the newly forged American identity, including character types, settings, and situations. His Leatherstocking Tales, a series of five novels that span the lifetime of their hero, Hawkeye, or Natty Bumppo, were released over a twenty-year period, between 1823 and 1841. In these works, Cooper examined the concepts of the frontier, progress, and the "noble savage".

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
