Millard Fillmore Signed Book Set: History of the Christian Church

Two volume set of books, "History of the Christian Church". Cone, Spencer H., New York, 1824. First American Edition. Volume 1 is 483 pp, Volume 2 is 492pp. Includes an Index and fold-out maps, plus the very interesting account of the Waldenses and Albigenses. First American from the Fourth London Edition. Inscribed by President Millard Fillmore, who signed his wife's name to the inner front paste down as "Caroline C. Fillmore, March 27, 1860". This set of books came from the Fillmore's library.

President Fillmore, always the ardent book collector and reader since a child, often presented Caroline with books, in addition to carefully cataloguing both her and his collection. As is evidenced here he would sign her name on her behalf as establishing ownership and then catalogue her books. In addition to her husband's inscriptions, Caroline also signed both books on each of the title pages. Having researched and reviewed other scarce books owned by President Fillmore, we find that there is most often a catalogue number identifier on the title page found at the top next to the signature which also may be in the hand of Millard Fillmore. This set was deaccessioned from the Buffalo and Erie County Historical library, the public library of which was co-founded by the Fillmores, and has the expected library stamp on the spine.

Lovely set of two books in quarter leather with raised bands, and gilt titles. Decorative paper boards with bright pink end papers. The binding is tight and square. Rubbing to edges, and intermittent internal staining to pages. A lovely set with a large signed and dated signature, completed entirely in the hand of President Fillmore on behalf of his wife Caroline.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
