Dwight Eisenhower Superb Signed Photo to Fellow Football-Playing West Point Graduate

8" x 10" vintage black and white photograph of President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), inscribed and signed by him as "To: Ed Garbisch - / with the personal / regard of his friend - / Dwight D. Eisenhower" at lower right. With a few wrinkles especially at the lower right corner, where the "wer" of "Eisenhower" is touched. An attempted repair to a minor closed tear at the left edge. Else very good.

Eisenhower dedicated this photograph to Edgar "Ed" William Garbisch (1899-1979), a fellow football playing West Point graduate. Eisenhower (Class of 1915) had made the varsity football team before a knee injury forced him off the field. Garbisch (Class of 1925) proved to be one of the academy's most talented football players of all time. An All-American, Garbisch developed a new defensive maneuver still employed today; he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954, a year into Eisenhower's first presidential term.

Garbisch left the military during the interwar period to pursue business management, but returned to serve as a U.S. Army Colonel during World War II. With wife Bernice Chrysler (1906-1979), the auto manufacturing heiress, Garbisch formed an impressive art collection. Many of these pieces were later gifted to prestigious art museums and even the White House.
