Description
Mahone William
Document signed "Wm. Mahone", one page, 11.5" x 7.5", January 1, 1867. Wonderful $100 interest bond for the Norfolk & Petersburg Railroad Company boldly signed by company president William Mahone, the Confederate Major General who distinguished himself during the Siege of Petersburg. In very good condition.

William Mahone (1826-1895) was a Confederate general, Virginia senator (1863-1865), railroad tycoon, U.S. senator (1881-1887). He attended the Virginia Military Institute on scholarship, worked as a railroad engineer, and eventually became president of the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad. During the American Civil War, he distinguished himself at the "Battle of the Crater" and was promoted to Major General. After the war, Mahone founded the Atlantic, Mississippi, and Ohio Railroad

The Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad (N&P) was built between Norfolk and Petersburg, Virginia and was completed by 1858. The line was 85 miles of 5' track gauge. It played a role in the American Civil War (1861-1865), and became part of the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad (AM&O) in 1870. The AM&O became the Norfolk and Western (N&W) in 1881. About 100 years later, the Norfolk and Western was combined with the Southern Railway, another profitable carrier, to form the Norfolk Southern Railway in 1982.

In the 21st century, almost all of the original well-engineered N&P, including the corduroy roadbed through the Great Dismal Swamp and 52-mile tangent alignment is still in service. It forms part of a major coal export route terminating at Lambert's Point near Hampton Roads. In addition to coal, most of the route is in active use in the 20th century for intermodal container and automobile parts and completed vehicle shipments.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
