De re metallica
London: The Mining Magazine, 1912. Translated into English from the first Latin edition of 1556 by Hoover and his wife, Lou Henry Hoover, and signed by them on front free endpaper, annotated: "Signed at The White House/ Feb 22, 1933." Folio. Illustrated with numerous full page and in-text illustrations reproducing the original 1556 woodcuts. Publisher's full vellum binding, spotted and partly affected by damp; dampstaining to top right of title-page and corresponding sections of first several leaves; other scattered dampstaining; some scattered darkening."De re metallica" was the first authoritative work on mining. Translated by mining engineer--and later President--Herbert Hoover, and his wife Lou Henry Hoover, it was notable for its clarity of language and its extensive scholarly footnotes.
