Jay Cooke Autographed Letter Signed

American financier. ALS, one page, 6" x 9.25", on his lined stationary, Philadelphia, January 21, 1864. Interesting letter in which Cooke addresses the "Gents" of his firm, Jay Cooke & Co., and writes: "Let not sleep close your eyes of rest (come) to the soles of your feet before you have read and acted upon this communication. / It is too bad, outrageous. Please see the secty & get him to order these duplicates issued at once & report fully tomorrow." Boldly written and signed in full. Cooke was fiscal agent of the U.S. Treasury. He marketed government bonds financing the Civil War. January 21, 1864, the date this letter was written, was the last day on which the government's twenty-five bonds, which he had done so much to popularize, could be sold to the public. It is interesting to surmise the frenetic events of that day which led to his writing this strongly worded letter. Fine.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
