John Hancock Mourned by his Friend in 1793 Printed Sermon

 

A printed booklet entitled A Sermon Preached to the Society in Brattle Street, Boston, October 20, 1793, And Occasioned by the Death of His Excellency John Hancock, Esq. L.L.D. and A.A.S. Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by Peter Thacher, D.D., Pastor of the Church in Brattle Street (Boston, Massachusetts: Alexander Young, Printer, 1793). Missing its original wrappers, the booklet is hinged between two stock covers from Goodspeed's Book Shop, Boston. The previous owner, Eldam Gillpatrick, signed the front title page. Expected wear including overall toning, isolated stains, and chipped edges, else very good to near fine. 30pp. 8vo.

 

John Hancock--Declaration Signer, President of the Second Continental Congress, and twice Governor of Massachusetts--had died on October 8, 1793 at age 56. His friend, Pastor Peter Thacher, delivered this memorial sermon before Hancock's fellow church congregants two weeks after the famous patriot's death.

 

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
