Antique engraving George Edwards "Uncommon Birds..."
Item Details
Description
George Edwards, English naturalist and artist, published "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, and other Rare and Undescribed Animals..." between 1743 and 1751. Nuremberg based publisher, Johann Michael Seligmann reproduced these copper engravings and produced this edition, from which our examples come, in 1755. The notation at the bottom of each image credits Edwards with having drawn the images 'from life, ' and names the new engraver as Sebastian Leitner. The hand-coloring of these images is vibrant and remarkable for having lasted over 250 years.; The image above depicts a turtle [Testudo tesselata Carolinensis] It is printed on a chain-linked laid paper.
