John Adams Boldly Signed Partial Ship's Papers

A portion of multilingual ship's papers signed by 2nd U.S. President John Adams (1735-1826) as "John Adams" at lower left. Dated January 12, 1799. Countersigned by Timothy Pickering (1745-1829), U.S. Secretary of State, as "Timothy Pickering" at lower right; and also by William Ellery II (1761-1836), Customs Collector at Newport, Rhode Island, as "William Ellery" at top left. The two columns--the left in English and the right in Dutch--are partly handwritten and partly printed on paper. Expected folds, some brittle and broken, though only the end of Pickering's signature is affected by such a break. Scattered foxing. Else near fine. Displayed to the right of an engraving of Adams, and at the center of three engraved informational plaques. Matted and archivally framed behind museum-quality UV ray filtering glass with document separators in a handsome rosewood finished frame. Not examined out of the frame. Sight size of the fragment: 9" x 5.25." Overall size: 26.75" x 21.5" x 1.25." Accompanied by a signed James Spence Authentication Letter of Authenticity dated December 11, 2019.

William Ellery II (1761-1836) was the son of Declaration of Independence signer William Ellery (1727-1820). Ellery Junior served as Deputy Customs Collector of Newport between 1797-1820.
