Description

George Walton Superb Signature on Impressively Displayed & Certified Document

Partly Printed Document Signed, “Geo Walton”, 1 p. front and verso, 7.25” x 11.75”, Chatham County, June 13, 1782. Horizontal folds with minor separation at edges, slight toning, else Very Good. Beautifully displayed in a custom red and black presentation book with gilt titles to cover.

George Walton (c. 1749-1804) was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence, representing Georgia. He was self-educated, learned the trade of carpentry, then studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1774. He entered politics in 1775, as secretary of the Georgia provincial congress. Walton served during the Revolutionary War, as colonel of the 1st Regiment of the Georgia militia. He was seriously wounded in battle, became a prisoner of war in December 1778, and reclaimed his freedom through a prisoner exchange that occurred in October 1779. In November 1779, the state assembly appointed him Governor of Georgia.
