Description
1863 Don Quixote Cervantes American Civil War era Jarvis English Illustrated

"Small wonder if the world received Don Quixote with delight! There was nothing like unto it before: there has been nothing to eclipse it since". – Rius, D. Leopoldo.

A rare Civil War-era American edition of Cervantes’ masterpiece – “Don Quixote”. This work is one of the most famous pieces of literature and is one of the most popular adventure tales to be written. This edition was translated into English by Charles Jervas – it was praised as the most accurate English translation through the 18th-century. Interestingly, it is because his translation of ‘Don Quixote’ that Jervas’ name was changed to Jarvis – due to a printer’s error – and the work has become known as ‘the Jarvis translation.’
