Stanley Matthews Scarce Supreme Court Autograph Letter Signed

2pp of a bifolium measuring 5.5" x 8.5," Cincinnati, Ohio, dated July 21, 1879. Signed "Stanley Matthews" and addressed to Hon. J.M. Dalzeel. Written on personal stationery, regarding a complaint held by Dalzeel on his recent treatment by the press. With flattened mail folds and light toning to the front page. Pencil notations at the top of the first page. Areas of soiling from a removed rusted clip. Provenance: From the famous Supreme Court collection of Scott Petersen.

It reads in part:

"I very much regret the matter of what you complain and allow you that I have no exception to take to anything you have said or written, that has come to my knowledge, in reference to myself. I appreciate the manner and the extreme in which and to which you [illegible] have suffered by newspaper sarcasms and ridicule: all the more so because I myself have been most [illegible] a target for like attacks..."

Thomas Stanley Matthews (1824-1889), known as Stanley Matthews, served as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court from May 1881 until his death in 1889. Prior to his appointment, he had served with the 23rd Ohio Infantry regiment in the Union Army.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
