Description
Stephen J. Field Lovely Letter Signed on Supreme Court Stationery
3pp of a bifolium measuring 5" x 8", Washington, D.C., dated October 29, 1891. Signed "Stephen J. Field" and addressed to Hon. John J. Knox. Written on Supreme Court of the United States stationery, regarding a request to aid with luggage. Field first thanks Knox for arranging for officers to handle his and his wife's luggage from Europe, and inquires if he could once again come to their aid. In part: "...On Saturday of this week Mrs. Field's sister, Mrs. Condit-Smith, with her daughter Alice, will sail from Havre in the French steamer 'La Bretagne', which will probably reach New York on Saturday or Sunday...Mrs. Field and myself would feel an additional obligation to you if you would be kind enough to say a like good word for them to the officers. Mrs. Smith and daughter will of course exhibit their baggage as they should, but you know there is a vast difference between the rough manner of some officers and the gentler manner of others..." With flattened mail folds and light foxing throughout. Boldly signed.
Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Stephen Johnson Field (1816-1899) served as Chief Justice of California. He was appointed by President Lincoln and served from 1863 to 1897, the second longest tenure of any justice.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
