Friedrich Gerstäcker was a German traveler and author whose works originally appeared in journals and newspapers. Gerstaecker’s first work “Streif- und Jagdzüge durch die Vereinigten Staaten Nordamerikas” translated as “Wild Sports in the Far West” was based on his hunting adventures throughout the United States. Gerstaecker contains information from his travels including sharks, ship wrecks, Staten Island, Irish funerals, Negroes at New York, Indian hunters, lead mines in Missouri, treatment of slaves, wolf traps, life among Indians, Bee hunting, farmer life, buffalo hunts, bear hunts, German settlers, and more!
