Description
(MUSIC.) Mason, Lowell. Musical Exercises, for Singing Schools, To Be Used in Connection with the "Manual of the Boston Academy of Music, for Instruction in the Elements of Vocal Music." Letterpress title-page and advertisement leaf printed recto/verso, double-page introductory chart and 66 double-page plates of music scales, notation, dynamics, and lyrics. Large folio, 23½x15 inches, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, rebacked, some repairs with sympathetic marbled paper; title-page with marginal loss affecting imprint; offsetting, latter third of the book with light dampstain at upper edge. - Boston: Wilkins, Carter & Co., 1851
A monumental volume of music lessons - certainly one of the largest of its kind printed in nineteenth-century America. The huge double-page format was intended to supplant blackboard instruction, being 'printed in characters sufficiently large to be seen throughout the school-room.' America (My Country, 'Tis of Thee) by S.F. Smith appears on the final spread.
