Description
1666 Japanese Samurai Prince Shotoku Handwritten Yokai Demon Buddha Illustrated

An interesting Edo handwritten woodblock-print of ‘Shōtoku Taishiden,’ called ‘Tale of Prince Shotoku.’ Prince Shotoku (574-622 CE) regarded as the "father of Japanese Buddhism," ruled as regent of Japan from 594 to 622 CE and is one of the most celebrated persons in Japanese history. The prince supported Chinese culture and Buddhism, introduced principles of Chinese government, established the Seventeen Article Constitution, and built many Buddhist temples across Japan. This ‘Tale of Prince Shotoku’ mixes fact and fiction as is common with tales of historic figures discussing numerous encounters with yokai (demons), Buddhism, samurai battles, and much more!

This undated volume is handwritten in column format made in the traditional way, using folded rice-paper and in a fukuro-touji (string) binding. They contain excellent illustrations throughout of scenes from the tale of Prince Shotoku including samurai conflicts, courtesans, Buddhist imagery, monks, and more!
