Albert Einstein Exceptional Signed Photo Dating from Same Year He Was Awarded Nobel Prize in Physics

A superb gelatin silver print photograph of German physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955), signed in full as "Albert Einstein" and dating from 1921, the same year he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. The bust portrait provides us with a frank, full view of the scientist's striking mustachioed face framed by its iconic mane of hair. Signed, inscribed, and dated as "Albert Einstein Mai 1921" along the bottom margin just outside the photo field. Minor silvering to the bottom half of the photo, with some isolated surface marks and wrinkles. The photo is hinged at top verso to a cream-colored mat. Light pencil inscriptions from the photo studio can be found verso. Else near fine. The actual size of the photograph is 6.625" x 10" while the overall size of it matted is 8.875" x 12."

This is a very unusual and distinctive photograph of Einstein. Here, he is portrayed not as "the wise old man" we have so often seen, but rather as a forceful "lion" in his prime. This artful portrait captures a vigorous Einstein at the peak of his powers. Looking straight at the camera, with calm but focused intensity, Einstein is fashionably dressed in a trim 3-piece suit. His exceedingly strong shock of salt-and-pepper hair dominates the upper half of the photograph. In our estimation, this is one of the finest photographs of Einstein ever taken.

There are no maker's marks or signatures in stone but we know from a profile portrait of Einstein dating from May 1921 that our photo was taken by Herman Mishkin (1870-1948), the Russian-born chief photographer for the Metropolitan Opera.

Einstein had visited the United States in the spring of 1921, undertaking lectures and speaking engagements at Columbia University and Princeton University and even visiting the White House. Einstein received his 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics retroactively in 1922.

Photographs of Einstein from this early period are rare. We have been unable to trace any other example of this exact image, and our photo perhaps represents the unique surviving example.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
